Castlevania Creator’s New Game is ‘Bloodstained’ [Updated]

Update: Bloodstained’s now passed its $500,000 Kickstarter goal.

Original Story: We told you last week that former Konami designer, Koji Igarashi, was cooking something up on the indie scene that just wreaked Castlevania. As it turns out, the ex-Castlevnania creator’s taken to Kickstarter with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night: a game that he wants YOU to help fund.

Miriam, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Concept Art

The 2.5D action-adventure game follows the story of Miriam, a girl with crystals infused in her skin (ouch!) who can summon demons. Her crystal-powers will be upgradeable over the course of the game as players progress. You can check her out in the concept art above which Igarashi’s warned are both are subject to change.

Igarashi is asking for $500,000 on Kickstarter, which he says will not be the game’s entire budget. Should the Kickstarter campaign be a success, he’s said that he’s set up other investments to cover the game’s remaining budget.

Proudly described as “A gothic, exploration-focused action platformer, designed by one of the godfathers of the genre!” the Kickstarter has 32 more days to go until Friday, June 12th, at 8:00 PM PDT to reach its half-a-million price tag. When we last checked, the game was already up to 204 backers pledging $13,215.

Since leaving Konami in 2013, Igarashi left behind almost a decade of Castlevania work behind prior to the release of Mercury Steam’s panned Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. With Bloodstained, he hopes to create something of a spiritual successor to it in everything but name right alongside Mighty No. 9 developer Inti Creates and former Castlevania composer Michiru Yamane.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, 1997. Konami.

For reference, it was way back in 1997 that Igarashi made another little game called Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. We’ll leave it to you to decide whether there’s any, shall we say, uncanny similarities between it and the afore mentioned Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
