That’s right, Valve‘s newest Steam Greenlight project will now cost developers a $100.00 submission fee in order to have their games listed for voting. If you’re unfamiliar with Greenlight, it’s a program that Valve initiated to give indie developers a better chance of getting noticed. This was originally done by allowing developers to submit their game to Steam via Greenlight for free. Once it was submitted, Steam users could then up-or-down vote the game, depending whether or not they wanted to see it available on the Steam marketplace.
The system has been working quite well… for the most part. Unfortunately, the internet is the internet, and said internet quite often ruins things when given the opportunity. Such was the case with Greenlight, as troll submissions popped up all over the place, flooding the listing of games and confusing users. Games like Half–Life 3 and Minecraft were a few of these submissions that were not to be taken seriously.
This is where Valve stepped in, announcing that all submissions must be accompanied by an entrance fee of $100.00, in order to weed out any potential users who do not plan on monetizing their entry. To this end, Valve has stated that all $100.00 of each submission fee will be donated to the Child’s Play charity.
