Street Fighter V Spring Update – Oro Breakdown and Rose’s V-System

Plus a teaser for Akira Kazama

Capcom’s Street Fighter V Spring Update is upon us, and with it, new information regarding content that’s coming in the next few months. The subject of today’s livestream is on Rose and Oro, mainly. If you don’t already know, Rose and Oro are two of Season 5’s characters releasing this year.

Back in February, Capcom had previously released a similar update, which focused on Dan and an introductory part of Rose. Yesterday’s live stream also had a brief teaser on Akira’s development, as well as the next three costumes releasing when Rose comes out. So, let’s break down what the livestream covered.

Oro’s Return

Oro returns from the Street Fighter III series of games, with a full breakdown of his character kit. Having last been playable in 1999’s Street Fighter III: Third Strike, the old hermit was completely absent from Street Fighter IV, and had very limited cameos in Street Fighter V.

However, that changes, as his moveset and V-System (and one of his alternate costumes) were revealed today. Most of his attacks from Street Fighter III have been translated over to V nicely, as they behave much the same way, such as his multi-hitting command grab and double jump. His V-System is where things get interesting.

Oro’s V-Skill 1, Onibi has him fire a slow-moving projectile that bounces in an arc. While slow to come out, it’s active onscreen for a long time, allowing Oro to approach behind it for pressure. His V-Skill 2 is a new move, Minomushi. It has Oro perform a spin that can be followed up by pressing a punch or kick button. We don’t know if it’s invincible to certain attacks yet or not.

Oro’s V-Trigger I is Manrikitan (shown above). After activation, Oro gains access to a stronger command throw on the ground and a command throw available to him in the air. Whether this trigger is two-bar or three-bar has not been disclosed yet, nor has its meter usage for using the Trigger attack. Oro is also able to combo into the stronger command throw from buttons that hit the opponent.

Oro’s V-Trigger II, Tengu Stone, is one of his Super Arts from the Street Fighter III games. On activation, it summons several random items from offscreen to surround Oro. These items attack in tandem with Oro, opening up new combo routes and frame advantage. Each item also has different effects, giving the Trigger more varied usability after each activation.

Rose’s V-Skill I and V-Triggers

Rose also got some coverage in the Street Fighter V Spring Update livestream. Capcom’s main focus for her coverage this time was to explain her V-Skill I and V-Triggers in greater detail. That being said, her V-Skill 1 has Rose use a tarot card, providing powerful applications in terms of utility. Using the white card, representing The Magician, enhances her V-Meter build. The red card, representing The Chariot, boosts Rose’s own damage output.

When V-Skill 1 touches the opponent, the effect is applied regardless of if they’re blocking or not (like F.A.N.G’s V-Skill 1). The green card, representing The Tower, decreases the opponent’s attack power, The purple card, representing Death, increases the amount of damage and chip damage the opponent takes from Rose. Already, her V-Skill 1 buffs her effective health and damage, and can also decrease the opponent’s effective health and damage.

V-Trigger I unlocks access to a teleport, which gives her increased mobility after using special moves. By inputting the trigger command (HP+HK) after a special, Rose teleports, allowing her to pick up combos from far-reaching buttons and specials. Rose gets three angles to teleport to, being right in front of the opponent, behind them, and above and behind them (similar to Nash V-Trigger 1). This V-Trigger, as well as Rose’s V-Trigger II, are both two-bar V-Triggers.

Rose’s V-Trigger II, Soul Illusion (shown above), has her summon an astral copy of herself. Each button she presses and each special she performs will be repeated by her illusion, allowing for alterations to frame data and damage. Rose’s combos also take a big upswing, as the illusion allows for new links from heavy buttons.

Rose’s V-System looks to be a powerful set of tools to use, but one more thing was also revealed for Rose today. She also got a release date, which is April 19th. That means she’ll be releasing with her stage in 12 days (as of the time of publication). Her stage, based on her Street Fighter Alpha 2 stage, is also releasing with her.

Wrapping Up With An Akira Teaser

But wait, there was another piece of information given at the very end of the livestream. Akira Kazama, the fourth character of the Season 5 Character Pass, and guest starring from long-forgotten Capcom IP Rival Schools, is now in development, with a teaser trailer. You can watch that trailer below.

Akira’s animations look a little rough around the edges, but everything else looks great with the character. It’s welcoming to see such a complete teaser. She’s currently slated for a Summer 2021 release, which means that Akira has a release window of between July and September. Following Akira will be a mystery 5th DLC character, releasing this Winter.
