Not many anime out there can truly capture the hearts of many with just it’s quality and uniqueness alone. My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU is one of those anime. Though I was a little late to the party, when I initially started watching this anime, I was pleasantly surprised to see it surpass all my expectations. Unlike the name suggests, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU is far from your usual romantic comedy anime.
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Plot & Recap
The series follows Hikigaya Hachiman and his struggles as a self-deprecating loner until he joins the Volunteer Club alongside female members Yukinosihita and Yuigahama. The first two seasons explore the bonds between the club members and their classmates as well as shinning a light on Hikigaya’s self-destructive tendencies and philosophy.
Through their experiences together, the characters grow and establish their goals. Yui’s wish is to keep the group together and form close bonds with Yukino while also having feelings for Hikigaya whereas Hikigaya wants to have something “real” between the three which further enforces his wish to grow up and form real connections with people, leaving his loner life behind him. Lastly, Yukino wishes to chase the only thing she ever cared about which is succeeding her father’s business.
This will prove difficult however, as Yukino being the second child of the family, was never given any expectations due to her older sister Haruno, so she’s lived an aimless life with no goals forcing her to base her life on other people’s expectations to define who she is.
Episode 1 Analysis
The first episode of the current season picks up immediately after the last where the three try to support Yukino and her goals. They both stry to help her even if they know it might all be in vain. Nevertheless, Yukino decides to confront her sister, letting her know she aims to take her appointed role in the family.
In the same episode, we also see the close connection between Hikigaya and his little sister Komachi as the siblings with virtually nonexistent parents, Hikigaya had to step up and raise his little sister alone. Her returning the favor and showing appreciation to her brother in this episode is perhaps the most wholesome moment I’ve witnessed this year.
Episode 2 Analysis
Episode 2 shows the confrontation and discussion between Yukino and her sister Haruno as Yukino expresses her wishes to her sister. Haruno is quick to give up the role as it would free her of any burden that comes along with it, if all she has to do is to convince her parents of placing those expectations on her sister instead, then so be it. No matter how pointless the pursuit may be.
The latter half of the episode moves on to a completely different tangent and mood where Iroha approaches the Volunteer Club members to help her organize a prom. While the group is hesitant to help out at first, Yukino eventually accepts the responsibility.
Episode 3 Analysis
The third episode shows the group rehearsing for the upcoming prom. While Yukino has been helping out on her own for the most part, Iroha convinces Hikigaya to help out. The episode mainly focuses on the three as while Yukino tries to set her own path and do things on her own, she still trusts those she cares about to help her out as well. Whereas Hikigaya helps both ladies by lending a hand and giving a compliment taking heed to Iroha’s advice, not treat them “just like sisters.” The episode really showcases the growth in the connection between these characters as well as their own personal growth.
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax Verdict
So far, this season is doing exceedingly well in keeping up with the previous seasons. It still keeps the same elements that initially attracted viewers, such as how it makes us care about the littlest and mundane things and Its many varied moments, from the cute and wholesome to the psychological and depressing. As a character-driven story, the series does an excellent job of making us care for these characters and the interactions between them, which is why I can’t wait to see how their stories will end.
