Loop Hero Review

A dark pixelated adventure with intriguing board game elements!

Loop Hero

After an opening that immediately recalled the famous Stranger Things TV series, Loop Hero welcomes you with a really well-finished and pleasing pixel art style. The pixels are really the gem that catapults you into a rather dark and mysterious medieval fantasy. Devolver Digital’s title goes hand in hand with the great classics of retro gaming. It took only a quick glance to bring to mind iconic titles such as the first chapters of Zelda, Ghosts’ n Goblins, Final Fantasy, Castlevania, and so on. Here is my Loop Hero review on PC.

SPELL OF DARKNESS

Currently, Loop Hero is only available on PC. However, it is available on the main online stores thanks to the efforts of the Russian studio Four Quarters and the distribution of Devolver Digital. Take note that Devolver Digital is a very famous American name behind the saga of Serious Sam. The thing that struck me the most when I replayed the game for several times, is the randomness of the scenarios, objects, and situations.

In fact, the title tells of a world shrouded in darkness and with no memory of what was there before. Only darkness, cold, and uncertainty seem to keep the survivors company. Doesn’t it remind you of some passages from “The Neverending Story”? The skeletal Lich King who has cast a spell of darkness and oblivion all over the earth seems to be responsible for all this. You must shed light on this mystery by following his path that is full of obstacles and dangers of all kinds.

After waking up in a small camp, your hero with an unknown name tries to recover the fragments of a memory that seems to have collapsed on itself. Also, in the pervading shadow, watch out for mysterious figures that come to life. While searching for the truth, you will also find other survivors. Take note that you can build a base camp with these survivors. Everything in the game will give you more and more experience. This experience will help you better understand the dark matter.

TEXTUAL WARRIOR ADVENTURE

Apart from the music and the sound effects, throughout the game, I have not heard a single word. Loop Hero has opted for textual lines that tell the deeds of the hero and his incredible world. This is actually an element that I appreciate a lot. Continuing with the objectives, and going to meet the aforementioned survivors, what surprises me is the quality of the dialogues that you will have with them.

They are all very deep and philosophical. Sometimes almost disturbing, as the cemetery keeper shows. However, it is never boring and more than a welcome surprise! Initially, your hero will be the classic warrior. This is a warrior who reminded me a little of the good Steiner from Final Fantasy IX.

Take note that going forward you can also change the class, such as that of the bandit. The game mechanics in Devolver Digital’s title are really very easy to understand. The game will generate a random world for you. Here your hero can walk around, meet with monsters, find various bonuses, and build a complete camp.

BOARD GAME VS. VIDEO GAME

During the endless round, “Game of the Goose” style, you can collect different armor, rings, weapons, and clothing items that will give you additional bonuses. For example, besides just damage, some weapons will give you a better chance of avoiding attacks. You can also gradually regain health, inflict a critical hit, and so on. When playing, increase the difficulty a little to win a richer loot.

A good part of Devolver Digital’s Loop Hero works with the wise use of cards. These help both to generate monsters and the world itself. Many board games work like this and will help you recover even some life and bonuses. You can then recompose the memories (10 fragments form a complete memory) and level up your camp. You have to quickly learn how to achieve the best combos and positioning, especially with Oblivion and Lanterns. In a similar way, the hero will also be able to get his weapons automatically.

Therefore, it will be necessary to pay some attention to this “overload” as well. Take note that the inventory consists of only 12 slots. Once you equip a different item, you will lose the previous one. There will be no way to recover it except from the treasures dropped by creatures along your path of darkness. Also remember that in combat you cannot place lands, almost a bit like Magic.

Therefore, carefully calibrate the moment of Planning (pause to arrange cards and objects) and Adventure (around scourging monsters such as slimes, harpies, skeletons, spiders, vampires, etc). At a certain point, the Lich King will arrive ready to stop you, but I advise you to do more and more “test runs”. This will help you better understand the mechanics and get the best possible combination.

CONCLUSION

As mentioned earlier in this Loop Hero review, Devolver Digital’s title will give you the opportunity to build your camp with other NPCs. These NPCs include the cemetery keeper, the cook, the blacksmith, the farmer, and many more. Take note that you can level up buildings and earn quite a few bonuses with that. Also, the board game type experience is really something special, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The engaging soundtrack just improved the overall experience.

Remember that the danger of death is always around the corner. If you don’t want to lose almost everything, you can also consider the idea of a strategic retreat to return to the camp. Here you can do some upgrades and then start over. However, arm yourself with patience and determination!
