With the recent news from Pokémon HQ about X and Y the gaming world is on a Pokémon hype. In light of this I’ve composed a list of the 20 Coolest Pokémon of all time, forget stats and moves, this list is based on pure awesomeness. I’ve also, in the interest of being fair, not included legendary Pokémon otherwise the list would be full of them. The list spans across all generations from Red/Blue to Black 2/White 2 so without further ado, in no particular order, here are the coolest Pocket Monsters out there.
20. Gyarados
Magikarp always was that abysmal creature everyone was confronted with when first experiencing the fabled Rod. What many Trainers didn’t know was if you trained up the irritating gold fish it would evolve into a beastly dragon/water type Pokémon. Diamond in the rough or what?
19. Blastoise
Blastoise is one of the original 151, not only that, but he’s also the third evolution of Squirtle, one of your starters in the Red/Blue games. A giant turtle with dual hydro cannons in its shell and a bad attitude in the cartoons pushes this turtle’s awesomeness scale up to 10.
18. Charizard
Another starter from the Red/Blue generations (they really did it right back then), Charizard is often the unanimous favorite when it comes to the age old starter decision. Fire is linked with power, and nothing quite beats a fire-breathing lizard in that department.
17. Alakazam
Every kid magician knows the magic words ‘Abra Kadabra, Alakazam’, but put those words in psychic Pokémon form and you have yourself a winner. Adept with spoon-bending and people-levitating, Alakazam wields a mysterious presence in the cartoons and is one of those Pokémon you have to beg your friends for a trade to be able to get.
16. Electabuzz
Not quite as cute as Pikachu, Electabuzz represents the devastating side of the electric type. Unsociable and powerful, this ape-like ball of high voltage fury is one of those one-off evolution (prior to Gold/Silver obviously) that really stands out in the Red/Blue generation.
15. Typhlosion
Naturally another fire type starter would make it into the list. With a name that sounds like explosion and a mane of lava, this little rodent-like Pokémon was always my personal favorite from the three starters of Gold/Silver, even if the competition was a giant flower.
14.Ursaring
Now I know this is game-specific, but it’s still a pretty badass gem of a Pokémon. A simple real-life animal that’s really cool on it’s own, Ursaring is simply a giant grizzly bear. You can’t go wrong with a grizzly bear, especially when its prior form is SO cute.
13.Tyranitar
Serious bias with Tyranitar here as it’s my favorite Pokémon. Nonetheless it’s hard to contest it especially after the havoc its Hyper beam cause in the show and the battle advantage the sandstorms it whips up creates. Similar to Charizard this lizard is one of the finest creations of Pokémon HQ.
12. Steelix
Onix was cool, a giant snake made out of boulders. Brock was a top lad whenever he pulled out Onix, but what happens when you dip Onix in a bath of steel? He becomes permanently angry and becomes Steelix! They literally got Onix and made him ten times more awesome looking. Angry metal snake is angry.
11. Milotic
Granted that this is a major Gyarados rip off, but the reasoning still stands. Feebas is an ugly, more useful than Magikarp, but still a poor Pokémon that, with some love, becomes the giant and majestic Milotic. Another dragon-esque Pokémon, Milotic has some serious prowess and command in a battle situation, and they look really impressive.
10. Tropius
This Pokémon is so ridiculously odd it’s fantastic. A Brachiosaurus dinosaur in a palm tree costume with bananas for an Adams apple and giant leaves as wings. This is what happens when Pokémon designers are running on no sleep. It got even more entertaining when you taught this Pokémon HM Fly as if it was the most logical thing in the world. Brilliant.
9. Salamence
Continuing the ‘Dragons are just plain cool’ theme is Salamence. Nearly normal looking this dragon isn’t easy to get and evolves at a rather high level, however the simple look of this pocket monster is well worth the effort. From a sexually frustrated T-Rex to an armored testicle with eyes, finishing up at a giant dragon. That’s an evolution tree to talk to your friends about.
8.Metagross
A mech-like tank of a Pokémon, Metagross is a welcome gift from a friend. With odd prior evolution forms this Pokémon meets its ultimate in its third form. Abilities of a psychic and steel nature also make it a rare mash up and an ideal party member. Its call is also pretty crazy.
7.Luxray
With a giant size in the cartoon and a friendly look Luxray proves to really be man’s best friend when it comes to battling. With an almost bear-like appearance this Pokémon looks intimidating and packs quite a punch.
6. Rampardos
Another dinosaur Pokémon now, but not quite as comical as Tropius. Rampardos is a headstrong (sorry) and powerful raptor-like Pokémon with a menacing stare. If your opponent tosses this bad boy out you know you’re in for some trouble.
5. Spiritomb
A swirling vortex-ghost Pokémon that’s apparently made up of over 100 souls and has been trapped in a Keystone for 500 years for performing bad deeds. Pretty cool, if you ask me.
4. Gigalith
Imagine a tank made of rock, give it some facial features, and a call like an avalanche and you have Gigalith. Living up to the ‘giga’ in its name this Pokémon brings size and brawn to the table with high defenses and tough attacks.
3.Krookadile
Looking like a cartoon thief, Krookadile is another entertaining installment to the franchise. Dark type among others gives it a great edge in battle and its intimidating façade impresses opponents.
2. Zoroark
Argue about the legendary status of this Pokémon all you want, I’m classing it as not. With almost human interactions, Zoroark plays vital roles in some of the most recent Pokémon movies whilst maintaining an almost mythological atmosphere around it. This Pokémon is what you could expect Giovanni to have at his feet in the coming years, see ya’ Persian.
1.Haxorus
Continuing the Dragon=Epic Pokémon formula is Haxorus. This Pokémon is another ‘that’s no easy mission to gain’, but worth its weight in gold. Looking like some unholy alliance between Godzilla and an axe, this Pokémon comes across as Tyranitar’s younger brother, but is equally awesome.
