Things just keep getting worse for Curt Shilling’s 38 Studios. If their initial financial woes (and eventually being able to make a payment to the state of Rhode Island) were not bad enough, the Rhode Island EDC board has decided to “take no action” to aid the ailing company at this time. After the meeting, Governor Lincoln Chafee said the financial situation of the studio has not changed since last week. He did state that the company did make some layoffs and has undergone some internal shifts.

That is a really inaccurate headline. From your own copy, Chafee, not 38 Studios, has “confirmed” layoffs. Chafee has a political grudge against Shilling (a potential political rival) and this deal (which he campaigned promising to take down). He has made it very difficult for 38 Studios to secure new investment by spreading Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt, *and* has acted dubiously-legally in “delaying” the movie tax credits that could carry 38 through the release of Project Copernicus (therefore saving the good taxpayers of RI from footing the bill for those $75m in loan guarantees). It really looks like Chafee is trying to punish Shilling, but the state of RI and the 300+ employees of 38 Studios will be the real losers.
