The Christmas season officially begins on the evening of December 24th and ends on January 6th. That means there are plenty of days to celebrate so why not spend some of those days watching some Christmas themed anime episodes?
#1 Minami-ke Episode 12 “Christmas Along With Eve”
This series based on the manga is about 3 sisters and their everyday problems with school. In episode 12 of Minami-Ke’s first season, Chiaki begins to doubt the existence of Santa Claus. In this episode her friends and sisters do every silly and ridicules thing they can to reinstate Chiaki’s belief. Oh and did I mention the famous Japanese Christmas cake makes a debut?
#2 Azumanga Daioh Episode 17 “Osaka’s Scary Story/ Feeling Different/ December/ Incredible Santa/ Christmas Meeting”
In the Christmas episode of Azumanga Daioh, Chiyo’s friends wonder if she still believes in Santa. After arguing over the possibility of Santa being able to deliver presents all over the world in one night, Chiyo claims her father is Santa. In this sweet episode, Christmas’ meaning is innocence and true friendship. And the side-splitting humor is enough to brighten anyone’s Christmas!
#3 Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop) Bonus Episode 3.5 “To Santa”
Usagi Drop, also known as Bunny Drop, is a sweet anime series that happens to have a bonus short about Christmas. Daikichi is a 30 year old man who takes care of his 6 year old grandfather’s illegitimate daughter. Everyone in the family is annoyed by the sweet girl so Daikichi takes up the responsibility to take care of little Rin. As the two prepare for Christmas, Daikichi explains Santa Claus to Rin. It’s a sweet short bonus episode that will let you realize how precious having a family, no matter how small, is for someone.
#4 Love Hina Christmas Special “Silent Eve”
Love Hina is a shonen comedy about Keitaro Urashima and his promise to enter the Tokyo University to find a childhood sweetheart. There is only one problem… he forgot the name of the girl he made the promise with! In the Christmas special the Hinata Apartments are in an uproar, which is not unusual in this anime. Naru and Keitaro have become friends in the series over not passing their Tokyo University entrance exams. They decide to take part in a Christmas superstition of declaring love for someone on Christmas Eve to have their wish granted. #5 Kimi ni Todoke Episode 22 “Christmas”
This shoji romance anime revolves around Sawako and Kazehaya. Sawako is a quite and sweet girl but earned the nickname Sadako (the girl from The Ring Movie) because of her misunderstood ominous appearance. Her secret crush, Kazehaya is the school’s most popular boy who shows her how full and happy life can be when you take charge of it yourself. In the Christmas episode Sawako is torn between going to a class party on Christmas or staying with her family for their traditional celebration. Without giving away the sweetness of this special, Sawako learns who truly cares about her.
