Once you finally finished the story of Edward Kenway in Assassin’s Creed IV you may be longing for some more seafaring. So we at Bagogames came up with a little 5 game list for you to quench your salt water thirst.
5) Pirates of the Caribbean – Xbox and PC – June 30, 2003
In this action role playing game you take on the mantle of Nathaniel Hawk who, while trying to replace a retiring First Mate, is recruited into warring against France by the governor of Redmond Island. Your missions take place on land/sea and being an RPG, you can upgrade your character throughout the game. While this game does very little to tie itself in with the movie, which was released about the same time, it still has a couple of Easter Eggs: Keira Knightly does the voice over for two cut scenes in the game, and in some quests you are tasked with destroying The Black Pearl.
4) Sid Meier’s Pirates! – Xbox, PC, Wii, PSP – November 22, 2004
This strategy action adventure game was developed by Firaxis Games and published by Atari. More of a pirating sim game, when it comes to this title think Civilization but with pirates, and instead of the world you are in the Caribbean going from island to island and causing havoc. However, you don’t only have to cause havoc, you can trade with the island, plunder other ships, dance with the governor’s daughter (no not Walking Dead) and other pirate like activities. This game is for the more OCD or analytical gamer seeing as you’ll being controlling your pirate for many in-game years and making him the scourge of the Caribbean.
3) Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure – Wii – October 23, 2007
This game, developed by Capcom, leans towards the old point and click adventures of yesteryear. Throughout the levels of the game the player must get to the treasure chest, and to do so the player must solve a series of puzzles and solve them with the Wii-mote. By doing all these quests and gathering more and more treasure you attempt to make Zack’s (the main protagonist) dream of being the best pirate ever come true. To do this however he must find pieces of Barbaro’s body which contain a treasure map to “Treasure Island.” This is a great game for those who yearn for the golden era of point and click adventures, and who love pirates.
2) Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker – GameCube and Wii U – March 24, 2003
Probably the most polarising of all the Zelda titles due to the graphics change and the heavy sailing element, many fans of the series grew to shun this instalment with only recently this game getting the love and adoration that it has deserved since the day of its release. It’s a title one doesn’t expect to have on this list, but seeing as most the adventure and travel take place on the high seas, and you begin your journey on a pirate ship, it deserves a spot. While traveling with Link on his boat you encounter enemies you must defeat with your cannon, fish for treasure, and find unmapped islands. If this isn’t pirating, then I don’t know what is.
1) Skies of Arcadia – Dreamcast – November 13, 2000
One of the most overlooked RPG’s on the Sega Dreamcast has become one of the most sought after, even after getting a GameCube updated release in 2003. In this Jules Verne-esq game you play as sky pirate Vyse and so instead of sailing the seas you sail the air as you attempt to stop the Valuan Empire in their quest to reviving ancient weapons that will destroy the world should they be activated. While the Dreamcast version’s visuals don’t hold up to well today, the game is still an amazing turn based RPG, one that Sega really needs to bring back on the newest generation of consoles, especially since pirates are hot right now.
