It was another close call at the box office as the two new pictures competed for the top slot. It’s not entirely surprising given both the studios and talents behind them. Ultimately, it was Disney’s Big Hero 6, the animated adaptation of the Marvel comic, the won the weekend with a $56,200,000 gross. Christopher Nolan‘s new sci-fi production Interstellar wasn’t too far behind with an even $50,000,000 gross. Both are solid takes for productions that each cost $165 million and they may have decent enough strength to last the rest of the month in the top 10. Naturally, with such high grosses on the top two films, there were some heavy dips. Worth noting is that while St Vincent hasn’t made much more in its fifth weekend in theaters, it continues to climb the charts staying in the top 10. Check out the top 10 movies of the weekend below:
- Big Hero 6: $56,200,000
- Interstellar: $50,000,000
- Gone Girl: $6,100,000
- Ouija: $6,017,000
- St Vincent: $5,707,000
- Nightcrawler: $5,512,000
- Fury (2014): $5,500,000
- John Wick: $4,075,000
- Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day: $3,495,000
- The Book of Life (2014): $2,800,000
Next weekend’s only competition will be the long-awaited sequel Dumb and Dumber To. With it being the only big film to be released in 3,000 theaters, it’ll pretty much be another weekend handed over to Interstellar and Big Hero 6 before The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 1 debuts on the 21st and obliterates the box office.
