Capcom Vancouver has been using their own proprietary game engine for a while now, including with their latest release, Dead Rising 3. However, that engine provided many roadblacks during their development of Dead Rising 3 when bringing it to Xbox One. The Forge Engine will be replaced from now on with Epic Games’s Unreal Engine 4 for all future projects, it seems.
The reason for this switch in engines seems to be the popularity of Unreal Engine 4, which creates more opportunities to hire programmers already familiar with the engine. This will speed up the learning curve and make developing new projects easier as the team works within the suite of tools already available in the engine. On top of this, Studio Director Joe Nickolls has stated that the team will be working closely with Epic “to maximize the capabilities” of the engine.
This switch in engines will mean that Capcom Vancouver will be using the same engine as Dimps, who are utilizing Unreal Engine 4 for Street Fighter V on the PS4.
