With the PSN outage fiasco finally coming to a close and most regions around the world reporting the network fully operational; Sony still has some making up to do. During Sony’s PSN Restoration Announcement they announced that they would not only be issuing a mandatory update to all PS3 users to restore the PSN services but that every user effected by the outage would receive a complimentary ‘Welcome Back’ packet.
Without wasting anymore of your time reviewing the countless days and hours of this fiasco here are the contents of Sony’s ‘Welcome Back’ package or as we like to call it the “Please don’t hate us” package.
PS3 users have the choice of TWO of the following games:
- Dead Nation
- inFAMOUS
- LittleBigPlanet
- Super Stardust HD
- Wipeout HD + Fury
PSP users have the choice of TWO from the following list:
- LittleBigPlanet
- ModNation Racers
- Pursuit Force
- Killzone Liberation
In addition, all users will receive the following ‘free’ extras:
- A selection of “On Us” rental movie titles will be available to PlayStation Network customers over one weekend, where Video Service is available. Those titles will be announced soon.
- 30 days free PlayStation Plus membership for non PlayStation Plus subscribers.
- Existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive an additional 60 days of free subscription.
- Existing Music Unlimited Premium Trial subscription members will receive an additional 30 days of free premium subscription.
- Additional 30 days + time lost for existing members of Music Unlimited Premium/Basic subscription free of charge for existing Premium/Basic members.
- To welcome users Home, PlayStation Home will be offering 100 free virtual items. Additional free content will be released soon, including the next addition to the Home Mansion personal space, and Ooblag’s Alien Casino, an exclusive game.
As you can clearly notice the game titles aren’t exactly the hottest games out there right now, but the games are free of charge and that has to count for something. Plus many of the titles are pretty sought after both on the Playstation Network and in retail stores.
What do you guys think? Is this enough for almost a month’s worth of downtime? Or does it just piss you off more?
Update:
Many players are pissed that they already own the titles listed in the ‘Welcome Back Package’. Sony’s answer, we’re sorry you didn’t like our decision but we’re sticking by it. The official quote came from SCEE’s Nick Caplin who said, “I’m really sorry that there is nothing there that you want,” he want to say, “We’ve tried really hard to put together a list of high quality BD games, rather than simply offering cheaper PSN titles. The average Metacritic rating for these games is over 84%, so these are high quality games. Unfortunately with a user base of 77m people, it is really hard to offer something for everyone.” So there you have it. Sony offers an olive branch and in their words is trying their best to please everyone but even then some players strike it down as not enough. Just remember folks, when Xbox Live went down a couple months ago, a service that isn’t free like PSN, all Sony gave us was the less than awesome game Undertow.
