The head of Sony UK, Fergal Gara, is warning fans that they should not expect to play any more big AAA titles on the PlayStation Vita. When the platform was first released, its target market was gamers who wanted to play big console titles on the go. Games such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Killzone: Mercenary were created as part of that strategy. Unfortunately this market simply wasn’t big enough to support development costs as neither game set the sales chart on fire.
Instead, the PS Vita has been repositioned to focus on smaller games and younger players. This new tactic seems to be working and Gara is pretty happy with the platform’s performance. Speaking in an interview with Eurogamer, he said ”we’ve done great numbers through the summer. You may have seen our TV campaign focused on younger gamers around the Lego titles. There’s a nod to Minecraft in there and LittleBigPlanet. It’s proved successful.”
Not all hope is lost however. Whilst Sony’s Western studios won’t be making any more AAA Vita titles, their Eastern developers will. Gamers who want big action games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss can play Japan Studio’s Freedom Wars which is coming over next month. Hopfully Sony will also localise their upcoming RPG Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines from Alfa Systems.
