Last night’s Sony E3 press conference had a lot of huge moments and some series that have been dormant for a very long time returned. But one resurgence was one that I don’t think many were expecting happen so soon. Hideo Kojima showed off a new title running in real-time, starring Norman Reedus and exclusive to the PS4. The game is called Death Stranding and you can check out the enigmatic trailer above.

The trailer opens with a quote from William Blake’s Auguries of Innocence, setting the tone for a properly Kojima-esque experience. Panning across sand and dead crabs, eventually the camera stops at Norman Reedus, naked and tied to a baby with an electrical umbilical cord, as well as handcuffs attached to only himself with one cuff free locked but no one in it. As Reedus hugs the baby and cries, it eventually disappears and he is left alone looking up at five figures floating high in the sky.
The thing is, it is easy to shrug the trailer off as pretentious and “out there”, but I do think there is some logic to the world which they are showing. Mind you, we’re missing some rules, but it is clear that the baby disappeared and then was still alive. It just headed away from Reedus. I think the initial handprints can be believed to be whoever was in handcuffs with Reedus, as well. Beyond that, I’m at a loss. The game doesn’t seem to be very deep into the making, but it has already gotten me thinking which is the best thing a Kojima game can do.
