Nintendo has announced that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be getting DLC in the form of an expansion pass, or a season pass as it were. This is the first time that a main Legend of Zelda game has received DLC, although Hyrule Warriors contained a couple of them.
The expansion pass will include two sets of DLC releases that are coming out later in the year, and the pass will retail for $19.99 USD. It should be noted the two releases cannot be purchased individually. The first of the two releases is set to come out in the summer and includes a hard mode, a new Cave of Trials challenge and a new feature for the game’s map. The second release is stated to come out in the holidays later this year, and will features a new dungeon, a new story and additional challenges. As well, players who purchase the DLC will unlock three chests in the game’s Great Plateau region. The first two chests will include useful materials for Link to use on his adventure, but the third chest includes something a little different. It includes a Nintendo Switch shirt for Link to wear in the game.
It’s very interesting for Nintendo to be releasing an expansion pass for a Legend of Zelda game, especially one that appears to be the biggest Zelda game that has been made to date. However, it will be a good addition to the players that will be playing on the Wii U, as Breath of the Wild is basically the last big title that the system will have. Nintendo making DLC for a Zelda game seems a little weird, but it also seems like a nice way to support the game a little bit longer and to give Wii U players some new content to play through the end of the year.

Announcing DLC before Breath of the Wild is even released makes me think it’s an unfinished game. If it was announced months later (as in the summer/ winter) then I wouldn’t be so skeptical about it. It’s been almost 5 years since BotW (Zelda Wii U) has been promised and this announcement of DLC before the release makes me a little worried over what the future holds for Nintendo fans.
I appreciate that at least I know what I am getting with the expansion pass. I don’t really have a problem with this model if it’s clear upfront what I am buying. The games that ask you to pay $50 for future unknown content drops are the ones that make me nervous because I am not sure if I will even like what they are releasing!
