Fable Legends won’t cost you one penny to start playing according to new reports out of Lionhead Studios. The 4 vs. 1 RPG is now going free-to-play rather than a retail or premium digital game.
Talking with Kotaku UK, Lionhead creative director David Eckleberry elaborated that the company intends to implement the same business model that the MOBA scene’s experienced lately, rotating heroes and all.
“We’re taking on a lot of risk,” Eckleberry said. “I accept that and so does Microsoft, but there’s no risk for you, as a player.”
The game will release with a number of missions and expansions planned for the near-future. According to Lionhead, there won’t be traditional free-to-play paywalls or recharging energy. Whether there will be an in-game currency that can be earned to unlock characters (like League of Legends offers) has not yet been revealed.
Four characters will be available at any one time and should you choose to keep playing after they’re off the free roster, you can pay up for them. When those characters to rotate back in, you keep your experience and equipment you’ve earned for them.
While Lionhead plans to grow the ongoing closed beta, the game’s still slated for release this year. It was further announced at a Windows 10 event last month that the game will allow cross-platform play on both Xbox One and PC.
