Nintendo have confirmed to Polygon that Fire Emblem: Fates will have same sex marriage included in Fire Emblem: Fates.
The company stated that the game will have “the possibility for a same-sex marriage to take place between the main character created by the gamer and another character in the game.” This gameplay mechanic is from the previous entry, Fire Emblem: Awakening, which allows your character to have conversations with his or her allies. Eventually after these conversations, your character and another can be married, but relationships between same sex couples were not included.
There are two versions of the game which are split up by storyline with a third storyline releasing as a download. In the conquest version of Fire Emblem Fates, there will be a male sex relationship, and in the Birthright version of Fire Emblem Fates, there is a female sex relationship. Both relationships will be included in the third edition of the game, which will be available as DLC.
Other examples of same sex relationships within video games, include EA and BioWare’s Mass Effect and Dragon Age series, and Square Enix’s Fear Effect series. Nintendo went on to say that “[they] believe that [their] gameplay experiences should reflect the diversity of the communities.”
Fire Emblem: Fates is scheduled to release sometime next year for North America and Europe, and June 25th 2015 for Japan. A trailer was recently released during Nintendo’s E3 Digital Event.
