The third film in the series, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 failed to exceed it’s previous record, but still managed to be one of the biggest openings for 2014. It brought in $123,000,000 over the weekend which, while impressive, was a step down from Catching Fire with a $158,000,000 opening. The rest of this week’s movies all took logical dips from such a large take by the mega-franchise. Big Hero 6 has proved its strength at the box office by remaining in the #2 slot and may remain there over Thanksgiving weekend. The only big move up the list is The Theory of Everything which opened up into 99 more theaters.
- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1: $123,000,000
- Big Hero 6: $20,086,000
- Interstellar: $15,100,000
- Dumb and Dumber To: $13,820,000
- Gone Girl: $2,815,000
- Beyond the Lights: $2,630,000
- St. Vincent: $2,354,000
- Fury (2014): $1,900,000
- Birdman: $1,855,000
- The Theory of Everything: $1,500,000
This week will see Wednesday releases of the dark comedy sequel Horrible Bosses 2 and Dreamworks’ new animated spin-off film Penguins of Madagascar.
