NetherRealm Studios hit it big when they began adding stories to their fighting games – a move which was still rare at the time. It made logical sense after making Mortal Kombat 9, that the team should try something that is inherently story-heavy. Injustice: Gods Among Us was extremely popular and had an excellent story to boot that made all the fights that much more visceral. With only days left to E3 2016, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced that Injustice 2 will be making its way to PS4 and Xbox One in 2017.
There is no word on a PC version, which makes a bit of sense based on the fact that Injustice: Gods Among Us never received a PC release and the last NetherRealm Studios title was Mortal Kombat X, which was a very poor port of the game on PC. The announcement of Injustice 2 follows a leaked promo poster that was sent to GameStops and would be given out to customers who pre-ordered the game, while supplies last. It seems like Warner Bros. probably pushed their announcement of the game up to today, instead of what was likely going to be an E3 announcement.
Injustice 2 will look to offer more customization than players have received in past fighting games, allowing them to customize the way their fighters look, fight, and develop over several game modes. The press release specifically states that their will be “unique and powerful gear earned throughout the game“, but chances are that will be very cosmetic. I’ll be interested to see if it does have any bearing on gameplay as balancing would then become an even more incredible feat. Mortal Kombat X‘s three fighting styles for each fighter offered a more challenging approach to balancing that NetherRealms managed to handle without many problems.
The trailer above re-introduces characters that were already present in the first game, but with some new visual flourishes. The second game will pick up where the first one’s story left off, as new threats try to put Superman’s regime back together. Some of the new villains in this game include Atrocitus and Gorilla Grodd.
If you can’t wait until 2017 to get to use some of the new skins of superheros in action, fans who have downloaded the Injustice: Gods Among Us mobile game can now unlock the Superman and Aquaman costumes from Injustice 2, via challenge modes. Until then, stay tuned to BagoGames during E3 2016, where there will surely be more information pertaining to the game.
