If you’ve familiarized yourself with Marvel Studios’ plans for the next four years, this shouldn’t come as a huge surprise though now it appears semi-official. Though he will appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron and most likely Avengers 3, Iron Man won’t be getting a fourth installment any time soon. Robert Downey Jr. confirmed this in an interview with Variety:
There isn’t one in the pipe. No, there’s no plan for a fourth ‘Iron Man.’
Marvel Studios’ next films will include Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Ant Man (2015), Captain America 3 (2016) and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (2017). Doctor Strange and Thor 3 should have release dates soon as well. With so many films currently in the pipeline, it’s so crowded that an Iron Man sequel just doesn’t seem in the works for the near future. It’s all part of a push to focus on more new characters according to Kevin Feige.
I don’t know that we’ll keep to [that model] every year, but what we’re doing this year [in 2014] and what we’re doing next year is: existing franchise, new franchise, existing franchise, new franchise. So I think it would be fun to continue that sort of thing. I don’t know that we will [do that] all the time, but as a general model, I think that would be fun.
At this rate it appears that a future Iron Man movie will be very far out and that RDJ will most likely be replaced by a new actor. What did Downey think about that?
I like that the idea is that it would be up to me, like I’m casting director for Marvel.
