Closing a Great Critic
We have very sad news for the gaming world. Iconic Youtuber John Bain, known as “TotalBiscuit” and “the Cynical Brit” has passed away at the age of 33. The announcement of Bain’s passing came from his wife Gemma on May 24th. Bain’s death was due to complications suffered from a lengthy battle with cancer.
John Bain “TotalBiscuit” was one of Youtube’s prolific reviewers. Having more than 2.2million subscribers to his channel and hailed as a champion by many indie titles and developers. He spoke on various topics and criticised many popular AAA developers for focusing on maximizing profit rather than developing engaging and meaningful gameplay.
Bain was receiving various treatments over the last 4 four years since his diagnosis back in April 2014. However, this did not stop the Cynical Brit from producing high-quality reviews and opinion pieces. For some time Bain’s condition was stable until he was hospitalized in mid-April 2018 for serve back pain. Doctors discovered that the cancer was growing, applying pressure on his spine and had spread to his liver. Because of this, Bain announced he was fully retiring from game criticism, believing he was no longer capable of performing his work that would satisfy himself and his fans.
The Cynical Brit was iconic for challenging AAA game designers/publishers but also represented many smaller developers who wanted a brighter and better game industry.
