Azure Striker Gunvolt has just been revealed as the newest title from Mega Man creator Keijii Inafune. The announcement came during Kyoto’s annual indie developer conference, Bitsummit. Whilst Inafune will be occupying the director’s chair, the main development duties will be carried out by Intil Creates. Director and developer have a strong history together, with Intel Creates having previously worked on Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 as well as the Mega Man Zero and Mega Man ZX series. The two are also currently collaborating on their fully funded Kickstarter project, Mighty No. 9 which is set to be released next year. Both games are being seen as spiritual successors to the Mega Man franchise. Inafune has even speculated that Mighty No.9 could even be turned into a Mega Man game if Capcom agreed to publish it.
Like Mega Man, Azure Striker Gunvolt is also a futuristic side scrolling action title. Players take control of Gunvolt, a hero who bears more than a passing resemblance to the Blue Bomber. As a psychic boy with amazing electrical abilities, Gunvolt’s life comes under threat from Sumergari, a corporation which has taken over the world by persecuting those with powers. He has therefore joined a rebellion of similarly minded psychics to overthrow the company.
From the trailer above, Azure Striker Gunvolt seems to be a very action packed game. As well as fighting his way through the games various levels Gunvolt must also get defeat several psychic bosses, including Melac, The Wormhole Maker, and Daytonna, The Explosive Rage. Azure Striker Gunvolt is set to hit the Japanese 3DS eshop sometime this summer. Let’s hope that a western release will soon be confirmed.
Update: Silconera has revealed that a US release is indeed planned for Azure Striker Gunvolt. It will launch on the North American eshop this summer, close to it’s Japanese release. A European release however, is still in doubt.
