On February 15, Kemco announced and subsequently released their retro-style RPG Machine Knight worldwide on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. This is an updated port of the mobile game of the same name, which was released back in 2013 on IOS and the Google Play store.
In this turn-based RPG, players take control of Frain, a young scientist who must travel to a strange new world in order to save his futuristic home planet from extinction. Throughout his journey, he is joined by Bell, a priestess, and Aulin, a spirited fighter. These three will travel the world while exploring dungeons, collecting gold, gaining experience, and completing side quests.
Machine Knight has a graphical style that evokes memories of games such as Chrono Trigger, while it’s first-person battles seem inspired by the classic Phantasy Star titles. However, some twists are added to the usual RPG fare. A complex class system is present, along with a blacksmithing system, which allows players to have materials received from defeated enemies crafted into powerful weapons.
While the mobile version of Machine Knight is free to download, there are some items and extra dungeons that are only available through in-app purchases. In the 3DS release, all items and dungeons are available throughout the game without the need for additional purchases. The graphics have also been updated from the original app-store release.
Machine Knight is on sale now on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. The game does not contain 3D functionality. It is available for $9.99 USD.
