In development for over six years, Pier Solar and The Great Architects was a true labour of love, being a new RPG created from the ground-up for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, and which saw a very limited release in December 2010 from developer WaterMelon.
Despite its niche appeal, the game received a lot of attention and critical acclaim, and WaterMelon recently started a Kickstarter campaign with the goal of rereleasing the game in HD and on several different platforms – Xbox 360, PC, Mac, Linux and Sega Dreamcast.
The original funding goal was set at $139,000, but that goal has been smashed, with the campaign having brought in a total of $231,370 in pledges at the time of its conclusion.
The amount raised has allowed WaterMelon to reach its stretch goals as well, which means that the version of Pier Solar and The Great Architects which will see release will be a Director’s Cut containing additional content, and that the range of platforms on which the game will appear has been increased to include Android, Ouya, and Wii U.
