Sony and LittleBigPlanet may have an answer to the Wii U’s asymmetrical multiplayer and Microsoft’s SmartGlass Technology.
The upcoming LittleBigPlanet 2’s Vita Cross-Play DLC sounded like a simple Remote Play title for the console. The experience goes much deeper than that.
The Cross-Play DLC will allow the use of the Vita as a controller for Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet 2. However, the experience does not stop there. The DLC allows for a level being built on the PS3 version, players can build a corresponding level on the Vita using touch controls, just like the upcoming Tarsier Vita version of LittleBigPlanet.
A staff member from The Verge was able to get hands-on experience. He saw a level with three players on the PS3 wondering around a circular maze inside a spaceship. The Vita player flew the ship through a side-scrolling shooter level on his own screen. As the Vita player moved the ship side-to-side, the PS3 players’ maze rotated. When the Vita player crashed into objects, gravity was temporarily suspended for the other players. When PS3 players found power-sups on the ship, the Vita player’s ship received missile and laser upgrades.
During his hands on level, he played on the PS3 and used a Vita as a controller. During play, he unlocked “Apps” for the Vita, once activated by touching them, he could change the game. A radar app lead to hidden items, a tractor beam app allowed objects to be dragged and dropped, and a telecommunications app was used to ask for help from a guide.
Jumping through a pip on the TV screen brought SackBoy onto the Vita’s screen. Navigating through traps on the Vita screen led to a bounce pad which launched SackBoy back onto the TV screen.
The two levels were created with tools that will be available to every player who gets the DLC.
