During Sony’s 2015 PlayStation Experience keynote, a new cinematic trailer was shown that teases a new feature coming to the Uncharted series: narrative choices. In the trailer, Drake and his believed-to-be-dead brother, Sam, are reunited. They recount their personal experiences while away form each other and Sam asks his brother to share stories about his crazy adventures. After asking, three button prompts appear on the screen, each prompt corresponding to a particular adventure for Drake to share with Sam first: his finding of El Dorado, his exploration of Shambhala, or his discovery of Iram of the Pillars.
It is not yet clear if the selection of a specific prompt will have an effect on the overall story presented in the upcoming Uncharted title. In the trailer, Drake chooses to talk about his finding of El Dorado first, which leads to a direct consequence. Whether or not there will be more weighty choices that have greater narrative implications has not yet been confirmed. Either way, this is the first time the strictly linear narrative of the Uncharted series has given players some kind of interaction with its story.
Naughty Dog’s latest adventure, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, is set to launch on March 18, 2016.
