Immediately upon entering the Necroplois booth, it was explained to us the game could be classified as “Dark Souls lite meets Spelunky”. Quite the mixture of styles but after seeing the game in-action, it made complete sense.
Necropolis is a “diabolical dungeon delve” with a geometrical minimalistic art style. Visually the game is played in the third person with a timing-based combat system which can be likened to Dark Souls. Adventurers come to seek treasures in Necropolis, all the while working their way to the bottom, where the exit lies.
Like many indie games being released today, Necropolis is procedurally-generated. The Brazen Head controls the dungeon and can alter it’s configuration at its whim. The game is a deathtrap and its visitors feed the dungeon. You will need to defeat many enemies and monsters along the way. Loot their weapons, find spells, and upgrade your character to become the next adventurer to escape.
Necropolis is currently being developed by Harebrained Schemes. Their inital plan is to release the game on PC, Mac, and Linux and maybe bring the game to consoles as well. Although they wouldn’t committ to multiplayer, they are intriqued with the multiplayer in such games as Journey and Don’t Starve Together. They could see the game’s single player experience being enhanced by the social elements. At this stage, Necropolis seems to be on the right path and should appeal greatly to those looking for a challenging but rewarding combat experience in an ever-changing world.
