When you look back on sales data for titles in the Super Mario series, one thing is for certain, it is going to be a very high number (with the exception of “Where’s Mario” of course!).
Although Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel were both praised indefinitely by both gamers and press both of the titles combined didn’t sell as many as New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Why is this? Is it due to people liking 2D more than 3D? Was the story better in New Super Mario Bros. Wii than in Galaxy? Well when speaking to GamesTM, Masataka Takemoto (Director of New Super Mario Bros. U) explained his views on the debate:
“I don’t think it’s because one game is better than the other. It’s just that compared to 2D, there seems to be more people who are not as comfortable with 3D controls. And maybe a wider range of people were more accepting of the New Super Mario Bros. series, which may have seemed simpler to them.”
Do you agree with Masatake Takemoto? What’s your theory? Let us know in the comments below!
