DontNod are taking on something slightly different as their follow-up to last year’s critically acclaimed Life is Strange. Their next game, Vampyr, focuses on Dr. Jonathan Reid, who is struggling with whether to maintain the duties of his profession, or succumb to the monster within himself. Screenshots released today highlight the duality of his character, demonstrating a conflict that players will very much have to wrestle with themselves.
Vampyr takes players to London in 1918, where the Spanish Flu is sweeping the city leaving you as a doctor with plenty of patients to tend to. However, the vampire inside of you has an opportunity to truly satisfy your hunger with so many sick and wounded. Stooping to your carnivorous desires will benefit the player’s abilities as you learn new powers. However, it seems like the game will not really offer the binary choice of whether you should kill or not, but more who you should kill. The premise alone is interesting, but DontNod promises an “engaging narrative steeped in vampire mythology” which only excites me even further.
Vampyr will be at E3 2016, so I’m sure we will hear more about the game when mid-June rolls around. Until then, you can read our review of the first episode of Life is Strange – DontNod’s previous game.
