A new report on E3 social media from the analysts at Crimson Hexagon has shown that Nintendo came out on top in the battle for publicity. The Japanese giant was mentioned in more that 47% of tweets sent out during the Electronic Entertainment Expo last week. PlayStation came a distant second with a 28% share of the conversation whilst Xbox trailed in third place with 25%. Overall, #e32014 was used 55,000 times and #Nintendo appeared 30,000 times.
These results vindicated Nintendo’s decision not to hold a press conference this year, a plan that was widely criticised by fans and the press. It was seen as a sign of Nintendo admitting defeat, an admission that they could not compete with the other two console manufacturers. Instead, the Wii U creator held a Digital Event where they revealed several new games and teamed up with the team behind Robot Chicken for some gaming related humour.
New announcements continued to be made through out the show thanks to Nintendo’s developer round tables and the Twitch livestream run by their famous Treehouse department. In fact, the Nintendo stream on Twitch spent most of E3 as the website’s most popular channel. These results shouldn’t come as a surprise as the company has already received a lot of praise from many different publications for their E3 performance. The positive reception has mostly focused on their handling of Super Smash Bros., the announcement of new IP and the dedication to female playable characters. Whilst ‘winning” E3 porbbaly won’t stop the Wii U from finishing in last place this generation, it is sure to give Nintendo a much needed boost in confidence.
