The NPD figures have been released for February 2014 and show that PS4 is extending its lead over Xbox One in the American market. Whilst 258000 Xbox Ones were sold last month, Sony has confirmed that the PS4 sold more, although they did not give a specific number. Thanks to the release of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, which sold 130,000 copies, Wii U sales were up 25% over last year. However that still only puts the number sold at around 82,000, well below its next gen console rivals. Unfortunately, we so far have no numbers for the sales of 3DS or PS Vita.
On the software side of things, the top 10 combined SKUs can be seen below.
- Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, Wii U, PC)
- The Lego Movie Videogame (Xbox 360, PS3, 3DS, Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, Vita)
- NBA 2K14 (Xbox 360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, PC)
- Thief (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
- Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox 360, PS3)
- Battlefield 4 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
- Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (Xbox 360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Wii U, PC)
- Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII (PS3, Xbox 360)
- Minecraft (Xbox 360)
- Bravely Default (3DS)
With few big releases last month, most games that charted are the same as last month. Call of Duty: Ghosts retains the number 1 spot for the 4th month in a row. It’s joined by 5 other 2013 releases, NBA 2K14, GTA V, Battlefield 4, Assassin’s Creed IV, and the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft.
Whilst Take Two’s basketball game continues to sell strongly, EA’s sports games FIFA 2014 and Madden NFL 25 have both dropped out of the chart. Although Lego Marvel Super Heroes also dropped out , the series success has continued with The Lego Movie Videogame being the highest selling début game this month. It beat out the Thief reboot which landed in 4th place and the latest instalment in the Final Fantasy XIII series, Lightning Returns, which is in 8th place.
Perhaps the biggest surprise this month are the sales of the 3DS exclusive, Bravely Default. Nintendo had a similar surprise this time last year with the success of another RPG, Fire Emblem: Awakening. Yet this new IP has done even better with over 200,000 sales with digital and retail combined. In other good news for Nintendo RPG fans, Pokemon X and Y sold another 130,000 copies this month, bringing their total sales in the United States to over 3.4 million
Overall the USA videogame market is currently quite strong. Total retail sales are up 9% YoY whilst hardware sales in particular are up 42% YoY. Both Xbox One and PS4 have big titles launching next month in the form of Titanfall and Infamous: Second Son. It will be interesting to see how these game effect the next gen battle.

Do you know what i see here..? A remake of a xbox 360 rather than continuing along the lines of xbox one because the 360 already has a good platform and xbox one is rather poop.
