If you go back and watch such classic films as Robocop, The Terminator and Silence of the Lambs, you’ll notice a title card in the opening for Orion Pictures. That company since when bankrupt and last released a film in 1999. Now the Orion Pictures logo is returning for the first time in 15 years with a new horror movie. Check out the press release/news on Orion below.
MGM brought back the Orion label as a television brand in 2013, which is currently used on syndicated court show “Paternity Court.” With no staff assigned to the label, MGM intends to use the venerable indie name Orion as an international brand for smaller releases on VOD and limited theatrical.
“Town” is released under BH Tilt, a recently-created multiplatform label from Blumhouse Productions. MGM does not have any specific future plans for the Orion Pictures name.
Okay, so maybe it’s not a complete return to form and more just a name-use thing. But it’s still impressive that the name is still around after all these years to remind of us of how influencing the name was in the 80’s/90’s. It may not seem like a big deal as it’s more of a nostalgic trip, but one can still dream that studio will return, right?
