Sony has been busy. There’s no secret there, but perhaps one has been slipped to the World Wide Web. According to an unnamed source who passed on word’s of wisdom to the Wall Street Journal, Sony’s next-Gen console (Code named ORBIS) is pushing for a 2013 release. Of course this is considered a rumor and as Sony always says, “This is a rumor and we do not comment on rumors.”
We also heard Sony had plans to possibly make their new system a digital download only console, but over time they realised they are not ready for such a big jump just yet. Internet services worldwide in most areas still struggle downloading high quantities of bandwidth data and if the PSPgo is any indication to go by, consumers are still not pushed for digital download and prefer the old method of in store purchasing content.
Sony has a lot of work ahead of them now more than ever. The company is going through hard time’s financially. They are still losing money in their electronics departments, but they have seen growth in their console and exclusive’s market. No doubt Sony’s new Chief Executive Officer Kazuo Hirai sees promise in the gaming business and will strive to earn a respected name as he tries to turn their losses around.
I have no doubt that the day will come when digital downloading will be the only way to receive your content. Luckily for retailers that day has not arrived. But will they be ready for the day it does? What do you think? What happens to the day you don’t get on your bike or hoverboard and head down to your local game retailer and make a game purchase? Will that be a happy or sad day for you? Comment below, we would be very interested in hearing what you have to say on this topic.
