As the live-action Detective Pikachu movie looms, another Pokemon movie is preparing for release this year, an animated follow-up to 2017’s Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You!. The movie, currently titled Pokemon the Movie: 2018 (so original!), is currently a bit of a mystery. Outside of a quick 20-second teaser showing off Ash, and a new, currently unnamed female character, we have little info. However, the studio behind the series, OLM, recently gave us some new insight into the movie. Apparently, in a similar vein to Pokemon: The Movie 2000, 2018’s movie will prominently feature the legendary Pokemon Lugia.
February’s issue of the Japanese magazine CoroCoro revealed that, according to Serebii, Lugia will be taking part in the movie in some way. The magazine also teased that next month’s issue will feature more Lugia news, and to watch out for more of the legendary Pokemon during 2018.
While a bit cryptic, we now know for sure that this movie will feature Lugia in some capacity. It seems probable that this new movie could be a retelling of the 2000 movie in the new continuity established with the 2017 film (why can’t these movies all just have names?), but whether or not that is the case remains to be seen. However, CoroCoro should be revealing some new info next month, and with the movie’s July release date coming soon, all will be revealed soon enough. Hold tight Pokemon fans, you’ve got two new movies and a Switch title in your future, the future certainly looks bright.
