It makes tons of sense that Capcom would eventually re-release the last three numbered Resident Evil titles on current hardware. They’re already taking on the task of remastering the older games in the series, so why not the newest ones too? Announced today by Capcom, the company will be releasing Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6 separately on PS4 and Xbox One over the next year. The announcement trailer below highlights which games are coming, in what order, and why you should be excited.
The most interesting thing about this release is that the games are being done in reverse order. Resident Evil 6 will start everything off by coming out on March 29th. It will then be followed by RE 5 in Summer 2016 and RE 4 in Fall 2016. Critically, these games also seem to be being released in the opposite order with which they were praised. Resident Evil 6 currently stands at a 74 Metacritic rating, with RE 5 being at an 86, and RE 4 being regarded by many as one of the best action games of all time, standing at a 96.
No matter which games you think are better or not, there’s no denying that the release schedule is a bit backwards. It makes sense to hold the fourth game back until the end since it is universally praised, but numbered releases are usually released in ascending order, not descending. Regardless, hopefully these re-releases turn out well and Capcom can finally get the ball rolling on a Resident Evil 7.
