With the recent announcement of Iron Man appearing in Captain America 3, the directing Russo brothers have expanded their pool of characters to play with. But how much further could they go? According to a rumor from Badass Digest, they could not only be setting up for a Civil War based Avengers movie, but also directing the major event. It also seems like they may be directing the fourth Avengers film in the far future, effectively inheriting the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s tent pole from Joss Whedon. Just keep in my mind that this is still all rumors, but here is what BD reported:
How closely will Captain America 3 tie in with Avengers 3? I’ve been told that the Russo Brothers are in talks to direct Avengers 3 and possibly 4. Sources tell me that they’re the favorites of Marvel right now and that they are the guys Kevin Feige want to pick up the mantle from Joss Whedon.
There’s a lot to spec out from this. For instance, it appears that Robert Downey Junior is signed on for Avengers 3, but not 4. It also appears that Captain America will not be in Avengers 3 as that will focus on the new crop of heroes (Ant Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange). There are so many directions the Marvel Cinematic Universe could take if these rumors are indeed true.
