EA made two confirmations regarding the upcoming SimCity title from Maxis. The first was that Origin was not the exclusive distributor, meaning that it will be available on Steam and other retailers.
The second and more notable is that the title will require a constant internet connection in order to be played. In addition you will need to be online through Origin while you play, even if you purchased it through Steam or various other retailers.
EA claims this is “necessary” due to a focus on multiplayer, regional impact, and the unique use of global economy that will be affected by all players. One could argue that it sounds very similar to Ubisoft’s practices, despite their recent comments towards the system.
