The PlayStation Vita is getting access to video and voice calling app, Skype later today via an update to the PlayStation Store.
Skype is available on both the 3G/Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi only models of the Vita. The Skype app includes free Skype-to-Skype voice calling and high-quality video calling that will utilize the PS Vita’s front and rear facing cameras. The Skype app is able to run in the background while gamers play a game or use other apps. This means that gamers who own a Vita and download the Skype app will have the capability to “pause” a game, get on a Skype call and then resume the game. If gamers decide to purchase some Skype credit, they will be able to use the Skype app to call landlines and cell phones directly from the PS Vita.
