Ever since the announcement of the Super Smash Bros Ballot on Wednesday, the battle for which character fans want as DLC has been fierce. Which characters are at the top and which ones are at the bottom? You may be surprised.
If you are unaware, Nintendo announced that the company is letting fans vote for which character they’d want to see as DLC in Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. After all the votes have been tallied, it is up to Nintendo to choose whether or not the character is viable for the game.
Through the use of Topsy.com, I was able to find the most popular character choices on Twitter, and this analysis extended beyond just gaming trends. Interestingly, it even highlighted how much discussion revolves around slots online, as many users share insights about gameplay experiences, tips for winning, and favorite game providers. By examining these trending keywords, I gained a broader understanding of what the gaming community values, whether it’s specific characters in games or excitement over popular slot titles. Here’s how I worked it out: Topsy tracks how often a word is used by Twitter users, helping reveal trending topics in real-time.
I searched both the character’s name and “smash”, and then searched the character’s name in a hashtag with 4smash at the end like this: #wonderred4smash. I combined both of these sources with the characters I believed were the most talked about and have compiled them into a list. Here is what I found as of the evening/early morning of 4th/5th April 2015.
NOTE: This is all a bit of fun. This is not proof of which characters are being voted on the most, this is how much they are mentioned and even that has variables. There may be a chance I forgot to include a character to research as well. Check it out for yourself and let me know if you came across anything different.
1) Shovel Knight
Yes, that’s right. A character from an indie game is the most requested for the game on Twitter. Yacht Club Games, the developers of Shovel Knight, have been behind the campaign for the character to be in the game. There is no indie representation in Smash Bros. yet, and with the company’s recent open stance with independent studios, it would only make sense. Plus, Shovel Knight would fit right in with its platforming attacks and variety of skills at his disposal. Also, if they were to include the stage, hearing the soundtrack within Super Smash Bros would be pretty rocking!
2) Banjo and Kazooie
Banjo and Kazooie were platforming icons on the Nintendo 64, but the developers, Rare, were bought by Microsoft in 2002. The only game they’ve been in since is Banjo and Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts for the Xbox 360. However, Phil Spencer (Head of Xbox) said on Twitter, “I think it would be cool if Banjo was in the next SSB DLC. We’ve worked with Nintendo on Rare IP before, no issues.” It just depends on whether or not Nintendo would be willing to work with Microsoft for their inclusion. Banjo and Kazooie would be cool to have included, as many fans remember playing the game on the Nintendo 64 when they were younger, and want to see them return in some shape or form. The character is being pushed by Playtonic Games, the developers of a spiritual sequel to Banjo and Kazooie, on Twitter.
3) Wonder Red
The main character from Platinum Studio and Nintendo’s The Wonderful 101 leaps in at the number three spot of this list. With the power of the other 99 heroes, Wonder Red could have some cool moves, and give Captain Falcon a run for his money on the hype factor. The vast number of mentions being made towards Wonder Red is surprising as Satoru Iwata mentioned at an investor financial call earlier that the game undersold. Popular Let’s Players, The Two Best Friends Play (actually there are 4), lend their support for this campaign on Facebook and Twitter.
4) Sora
Arguably one of the most shocking inclusions out of this list is Sora from the Kingdom Hearts series. Originally on the PlayStation 2, Kingdom Hearts has had four releases on Nintendo platforms, which include Chain of Memories, 358/2 Days, Re: Coded, and Dream Drop Distance. The characters have starred in Nintendo consoles almost as much as Sony’s platforms. Also, a few dedicated Kingdom Hearts YouTubers, HMK, and TheGamersJoint may have been behind the surge of Kingdom Hearts fans who want Sora to be a part of the game. HMK has 36,000 subscribers, and TheGamersJoint has 59,000 subscribers. With a blend of melee and ranged magical attacks, Sora could be a great addition. Personally, this is my pick.
5) Bayonetta
Another Platinum Games character, Bayonetta, has made the fifth spot on the list. The seductive witch has cast a spell on many on Twitter. With the action-heavy nature of the game, and plenty of combos to draw upon, Bayonetta could make for a great fighter. During development of Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS, the director of Bayonetta, Hideki Kamiya, said that he “had enough of smash idiots.” He then uttered an f-bomb in the same tweet towards those who wanted the character in the game. Despite this, fans are still voting for Bayonetta.

I also really hope they do multiple DLC characters in this ballot. Like do 3 characters. 1 that would be new and unique/owned by Nintendo (like King K. Rool), 1 that is from a previous smash game (like Wolf or Roy), and 1 from a 2nd or 3rd party (like Bomberman or Banjo and Kazooie). I can’t see us paying $5.00 for 1 DLC character. I would really hope Nintendo does at least 3 DLC characters. That would please the fans a lot more.

Wolf is most likely gonna come this August, independent of this poll. As for Roy, most of the Fire Emblem fanbase hates Roy, so I doubt he’s ever gonna return.
I also doubt that we’ll get any third parties, especially not Banjo given that Nintendo doesn’t want to give Microsoft any free advertising (including Amiibos).

I think Bomberman would be more likely in my above mentioned idea because, I believe, he is owned by Hasbro which is the studio for Kirby.
Roy is debatably the worst lord in the entire Fire emblem series in addition he promotes to his second class change at chapter 21x (x is Gaidan chapters which are only unlocked after meeting certain requirements.) Which if you didn’t collect all of the special weapons from the other Gaidan Chapters you have one more chapter then the game is over, if you got all of the special weapons you have another 3 chapters. His stats are average, and he starts off at level 1 you have about 3 chapters to grind to fight the final boss, and at this point in the game your other units completely out class him. The one redeeming feature about Roy is the Sword of Seals which gives him a Def +5, Res +5 and a ranged sword.
King K. Rool is my top most desired character for smash! It could use another heavy weight fighter.
Ok so he sucks in the Fire Emblem games… Pac-Man moved in four directions and ate in his games, yet he is in Smash Brothers. Just because a character is bad or is hardly interesting in their original game, doesn’t mean they won’t fit in Smash. Maybe I don’t understand because I’ve never played those games, but in Smash, Roy was fun to me.
Not only that, but in the DKC games, he is actually kind of quick. For me, it is so easy to imagine a move-set, costumes, stage, music, everything! There is no real reason he shouldn’t be in the game. I can quickly think of reasons against other characters, but not so much for K. Rool. He needs to be in. No excuses lol

I, not being a Fire Emblem, or Melee Tournament/competitive fan, liked Roy because he seemed cool to me. Marth sounds like a girl and Roy shoots flames from his sword. In reality though, I would be upset if Roy did return over a brand new character for this DLC. If they did multiple characters and brought back old ones, then I’d be ok with Roy’s return.
But it’s ok mewtwo was worse and he made it back. So if we’re basing it off of past performances Roy should have gotten in over mewtwo

A lot of people love Bayonetta, but I’m sorry, she’s just too sexualized to be in Smash. Look at the roster, not a single character in the roster of Smash Brothers is from an M rated game. She’s butt ass naked except for hair for gods sake. I just don’t see Nintendo putting in Bayonetta.
You realize Snake is from an M rated series, right? He’s no longer in the game, yes, and isn’t sexualized, but he was still from an M rated series.

I see that point, but Bayonetta’s outfit… IS her hair while Samus is wearing actual clothes. The over-all themes of the Metroid games focus more on Samus in her power suit, not her shooting pistols in an M rated game like Bayonetta. I don’t dislike Bayonetta as a character. I think she is sexy and unique, but I just don’t see Nintendo putting her in Smash 4.

I’d rather had these than another star-fox or donkey kong or (please don’t!) mario character. And all of these “clone of x” aren’t very interesting (Dr mario, falco, lucina, dark pit, ganon/capt falcon (the first one being just slower and stronger)).
So these two, along with Isaac, would be ones that defenetely would make sense – and would be fun to play for sure!
My problem with Isaac is the fact that he was in 1 game a long time ago. A lot of people have no idea who he is. It’s like Shulk, when he got put in, people were like “Who? What game is he from?” For a unique DLC opportunity, I just see Isaac being a wasted opportunity. I know some people like him, but in my large community of friends who play Smash, none of us play Shulk; barely any of us knew Xenoblade Chronicles existed. I wouldn’t want to see DLC be used like that.
He was in three games, and the last one was out after Punch-Out Wii. Little Mac is in the game. What is your point? And Smash is about Nintendo games. Roy and FE as a whole was unknown, the same for Pit and Kid Icarus. If Smash was about only characters everyone knows, Mario and Pokémon would be the only series represented.

For instance, I know for a fact that Wolf would be here based on his Smashboards thread alone (which has over 2400 members confirmed to be voting for him). I would like to say the same for the characters in my avatar, but sadly, I cannot.

All of these would be cool but Captain N: The Game Master is the captain of cool and armed with his Nes Controller and Nes Zapper he is up to the challenge of joning the Smash Brotherhood!

I don’t know where and how you searched, but your statistics are laughable, those three guys you saw nowhere are actually talked about everywhere.
Anyway Shovel Knight is absolutely unknown in Japan, Bayonetta is screwed in so much ways, and any 3rd party won’t make it in Smash 4 by DLC, the red tape and everything makes them complicated and not profitable. They accept 3rd party votes only to know which one would be good for Smash 5.
And by the way, it’s ISAAC, goddamit, not “Issac”, learn to read.
Like I said in the article, it is not definitive, and it was just for fun, but Isaac is still much lower than the five listed here. Also this list isn’t for probable characters; it is a look at who is talked about. I have also explained potential reasons for most of the characters’ number of mentions. For example, the Best Friends Play with Wonder Red, and HMK/TheGamersJoint with Sora.

The popular ones are those everyone talk about. Look on Twitter, if you want to see who’s “talked about”, you should have put Shantae somewhere here too, certainly not Sora, Wonder Red & Bayonetta which I’ve seen a LOT less. I agree on Shovel Knight and Banjo, though.

What’s wrong with Wonder Red?
I’ve checked Wolf, King K Rool, and Issac. They’re no where near these guys. Check it out for yourself.
I don’t know where and how you searched, but your statistics are laughable, those three guys you saw nowhere are actually talked about everywhere.
Anyway Shovel Knight is absolutely unknown in Japan, Bayonetta is screwed in so much ways, and any 3rd party won’t make it in Smash 4 by DLC, the red tape and everything makes them complicated and not profitable. They accept 3rd party votes only to know which one would be good for Smash 5.
And by the way, it’s ISAAC, goddamit, not “Issac”, learn to read.
Like I said in the article, it is not definitive, and it was just for fun, but Isaac is still much lower than the five listed here. Also this list isn’t for probable characters; it is a look at who is talked about. I have also explained potential reasons for most of the characters’ number of mentions. For example, the Best Friends Play with Wonder Red, and HMK/TheGamersJoint with Sora.
And you missed all the ones mentioning Isaac and all the other actually popular ones?
The popular ones are those everyone talk about. Look on Twitter, if you want to see who’s “talked about”, you should have put Shantae somewhere here too, certainly not Sora, Wonder Red & Bayonetta which I’ve seen a LOT less. I agree on Shovel Knight and Banjo, though.
I look more than enough content about the Smash Bros Ballot to know it all well.

Wolf is a safe bet, watch him be announced at E3. Honestly, a vote for him is a vote wasted because he’s most likely on the way right now.
