Director Robert Orci recently dropped out of the Power Rangers movie to focus on Star Trek 3 and it appears he has some big plans. Specifically, Orci wants William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy to reprise their roles as Kirk and Spock for the latest Star Trek movie. Shatner was originally written to have a cameo in 2009’s Star Trek that Orci co-wrote, but it never came to be for which Shatner was very vocal about being turned down from. Now it appears the current script will include a scene between the original duo. Of course, the film is still in the writing stage and has a good six months before shooting in which anything could be rewritten. If true, however, it would be the first time the two have shared the big screen since 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. It would also mean that Nimoy will have had a cameo role in all three of the new Trek films.
And, of course, this all depends if Shatner and Nimoy actually agree to the cameo roles. So at the moment this is still a big “if”, but a tantalizing one none the less. The first thing that comes to mind is how Kirk could still be alive after he was killed in 1994’s Star Trek: Generations. Who knows, they may find some strange way to bring him into the fold as the series doesn’t seem bound by many restrictions. One strange thing to ponder is that if this comes to pass, Shatner will have appeared in multiple generations of Trek films. As much as I’d like to see this new series go off in its own direction separate from the references and relations to the original movies, I have to admit that seeing Shatner and Nimoy together again in their iconic roles is making my inner geek scream with joy.
