Based in Redwood City, Electronic Arts have finally released the game that many people have been waiting for. Star Wars: The Old Republic is set thousands of years prior to the events that took place in the original Star Wars movie and allows players to take on the guise of a character in the fictional universe. The game was developed by Electronic Arts who took six years to create it, as well as around $100 million to $200 million. It is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, or MMO.
There is a lot of potential for this game, with players having the possibility of playing against thousands of others at a time. You can play this in your home, while other members of your household play PartyPoker France or Monopoly and you could have any variety of competitors that you are up against. There is a lot resting on this game, not least the reputation of CEO John Riccitiello as during his time in charge, EA’s stock has been falling for four years with annual losses. If this game is a success, it will make a lot of money for the company as well as proving that Riccitiello was right to decide to concentrate on fewer, higher-quality games.
There are indeed millions of fans of the Star Wars saga worldwide, it basically just depends on whether they are willing to part with their money for Star Wars: The Old Republic. One reason why this game may struggle to get going however, is because it plans to charge players $13 to $15 a month. There are a large number of MMOs that are free to play, so this one will have to be really good to convince people to part with their money when they may not otherwise have to.
