Fighting games are not often regarded for their cinematic stories, but with recent games like Mortal Kombat X, that seems to be changing. With plenty of lore and rich character history to reflect on and develop further, Street Fighter V looks to be making the next foray into something akin to the Mortal Kombat franchise’s cinematic narrative. Fans who are looking forward to an ambitious story from Street Fighter V will be able to experience it through a free content update in June 2016 – four months after Street Fighter V is released on February 16th, 2016.
The trailer above showcases just how the story will look, but Peter Rosas, Associate Producer at Capcom, has provided some more details via the PlayStation Blog. The game’s story will take place between the events of Street Fighter IV and III, with a focus on M. Bison and Shadaloo. This marks the first time that the Street Fighter franchise has attempted to tell a story in this fashion, and most of it is sounding like it will be structured similarly to how Mortal Kombat has been doing it. Unfortunately, that is about all the info available at the moment, but there is some other story news worth mentioning.
Before the free June update, Street Fighter V will still ship with storylines for each of its characters in the same way it always has. Character stories will detail each fighter’s motivations for fighting as well as what their relationship is with other characters in the series. This would be a good way to prime yourself for the cinematic story, in which some of those details may be taken as a given. The character stories will be illustrated by Bengus, a famous Japanese illustrator known for his work on previous Capcom titles.
Street Fighter V will release on February 16th, 2016 for PlayStation 4, PC and Linux, and will feature cross-platform play.
