At GDC Nintendo revealed that there are currently more than 50 titles in development for the Wii U eShop that use the Unity engine. Nintendo announced a partnership with Unity Technology back in 2012 in order to make the Wii U a more attractive platform to developers, particularly smaller ones. ”There are over a million Unity developers, including many in developing countries where the business of dedicated gaming machines is not prosperous,” said Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata last year. “We would like to create opportunities for these developers to have their games available for Wii U.” This seems to have worked as whilst the Wii U is being abandoned by almost all the big third parties, its eShop has quite a nice line up of cheap, innovative games.
At this year’s GDC Nintendo hosted a special booth aimed entirely at indie developers. On display were 9 different Unity games that will launch on the Wii U in the coming months. These games were:
- Armillo
- Ballpoint Universe: Infinite
- Cubemen 2
- Ittle Dew
- Monkey Pirates
- Nihilumbra
- Stick It to the Man
- Teslagrad
- Wooden Sen’SeY
Speaking to Siliconera, Nintendo of America’s Senior Manager of Marketing, Damon Baker, said that ”over the course of this show, we have nine games on display. We have 17 that are currently in the pipeline, that have been submitted. So they will all be out within the next two months. And then, we have another fifty that are waiting in the wings, that are coming; so we’ve got a lot of Unity content on the way.” The company also revealed that they are working to get Unity for the 3DS and showed off the Nintendo Web Framework, another engine designed to attract more developers to the platform.
