How To Train Your Dragon 2, while highly praised, did not make a big huge splash at the box office and now the price is being paid. We’ve already seen Dreamworks make massive layoffs after the not-so-ideal opening for the film and now it appears that they may be taking aim at the upcoming third film in the trilogy. While there is no official word on why, How To Train Your Dragon 3 will be delayed to June 9, 2017 instead of 2016. It could be a restructuring of creative staff or it could just be a move to place stronger animated films ahead of it. At any rate, How To Train Your Dragon 2 didn’t do that bad making a solid profit in both the domestic and foreign markets. And, at least for me, it’s one of the best animated films of the year so far. Read the press release below:
On the heels of the success of their latest epic adventure, Hiccup and Toothless have plans to soar across the big screen once again with the announcement of the third chapter in DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon series shifting to a June 9, 2017 release date. From the same creative team as the first two films, writer/director Dean DeBlois and producer Bonnie Arnold, How to Train Your Dragon 3 continues the story where the sequel leaves off (sorry folks, no spoilers here). Returning cast includes Jay Baruchel as Hiccup, America Ferrera as Astrid and Cate Blanchett as Valka.’
