The superheroes continue to hold the top spot for the weekend box office. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was once again #1 with $28,400,000 in its second week while Guardians of the Galaxy followed close behind with $24,735,000 in its third week. If you’re wondering why those numbers were low, it’s because three new films with wide releases claimed the slots below the top 2. Let’s Be Cops came in #3 with $17,700,000 (not counting all the money it made since opening on Wednesday), The Expendables 3 followed with $16,200,000 and the big screen adaptation of the classic novel The Giver only made $12,760,000. August usually sees a slow down in the box office, but it was surprising given the numbers for this many new films and top earners at the box office.
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014): $28,400,000
- Guardians of the Galaxy: $24,735,000
- Let’s Be Cops: $17,700,000
- The Expendables 3: $16,200,000
- The Giver: $12,760,000
- Into The Storm: $7,720,000
- The Hundred-Foot Journey: $7,109,000
- Lucy: $5,317,000
- Step Up All In: $2,700,000
- Boyhood: $2,150,000
Next week looks like it may be a repeat of the top two earners as none of the top 3 (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, If I Stay, When the Game Stands Tall) will be in over 3,000 theaters.
