With Nintendo not being allowed to set the RRP for their upcoming WiiU console in the UK, it’s up to the retailers themselves to decide how they’re going to price the hotly anticipated hardware for launch on November 30th. Those retailers, however, are already relatively close to coming up with prices for the console.
MCV were told by one of their unlisted sources that we can expect them to set the Basic Pack (a white model with 8GB of storage and a Gamepad) at £250, the Premium Pack (a black unit with 32GB of storage, a Gamepad, a copy of Nintendoland and the chance to buy games at a discount from the Nintendo store) to be set between £290 and £300 and the ZombiU Edition (which is the Premium Pack but with the added bonus of ZombiU and a Pro Controller) for £330.
However, Gamestation sent out a tweet earlier in the day (picked up by CVG) saying that they were going to sell the Basic Pack at £210 and the Premium Pack for £250. Said tweet has since been deleted (hence the lack of a link), but it is rather close to MCV’s reported suggested trade prices for the packs with the Basic Pack going for £205 and the Premium Pack going for £246. And; even earlier in the day, Amazon had a listing for the WiiU at a starting price of £199, but has since taken down the listing and replaced it with a £250 one.
Putting these numbers into a converter, the trade price for the Basic Pack (£205) converts into around $330 whilst the Premium Pack (£246) converts into about $396. Whilst inflated past their American prices ($299 and $349 respectively), that’s still rather respectable considering the extra shipping costs and such. Plus, it’s likely that the retailers will be tripping over themselves to have the best deal come the Christmas Rush. And, reminder, these are not finalised prices, they could still go either way.
