Today, WizKids and Wizards of the Coast announced a new licensing deal for an assortment of products based on Magic: the Gathering, the biggest trading card game in the world. WizKids are known for their miniatures, both painted and unpainted, and the deal will be for a line of miniatures and for a new board game based on Magic.
The first products that will be coming out of this deal will be a line of pre-painted, and finely sculpted miniatures based on token creatures in Magic: the Gathering. There are cards in Magic that can create creatures like vampires or dragons, and players usually represent them with cards or other items like physical tokens. Now, players will have the option of buying the minis that WizKids will be making and use them to help bring their games to life, more or less.
The second product being produced will be a board game based on Magic. According to the press release, “the board game will pull from the original trading card lore. Players will play as Planeswalkers, exploring the landscape of Dominaria as they establish connections to their mana sources, gathering power before their opponents do and building their hand of spell cards.” This is interesting as there has been a Magic: the Gathering set of board games released by Wizards parent company Hasbro over the past few years, so it will be interesting to see what WizKids brings to the table, so to speak. This also coincides with next years 25th anniversary celebration of Magic: the Gathering, so expect some interesting blasts from the past included in the board game.
WizKids has been on a roll as of late, with their recent deal with Games Workshop, new Warhammer 40k games and now the increased partnership with Wizards of the Coast. WizKids already creates a number of Dungeons & Dragons minis for Wizards, so the move towards Magic minis isn’t completely out of the blue, but will be welcome news for fans of the game. Will you be adding the minis to your tabletop Magic: the Gathering experience? Let us know in the comments below.
