Xbox Game Pass is pretty much available in every Xbox One bundle you can buy to give you a taste of their download service. On top of the expansive library that Game Pass already offers, Phil Spencer announced via Major Nelson’s blog today that they “plan to release all new Xbox One exclusive games from Microsoft Studios into Xbox Game Pass on the same date as their global release.” This means that the upcoming Sea of Thieves will be making its way to Xbox Game Pass on March 20th, when it is also released digitally and in retail outlets.
Sea of Thieves is just the beginning though, as this offer will also include other upcoming titles like Crackdown 3 and State of Decay 2. More importantly, it includes unannounced games like the next entries in the Gears of War, Halo, and Forza franchises. Of course, the service is similar to PlayStation Plus in that if you don’t have a subscription you cannot play games that are released through Game Pass until you renew. Microsoft will be partnering with retailers to offer a 6-month Game Pass subscription for $59.99 USD.
I think this is a very smart decision that offers plenty of reason to maintain a subscription (you get day one releases of Microsoft Studios’ games, as well as whatever else is added to Game Pass) and is very inviting for new Xbox One owners. It’s hard not to get excited knowing that you have a library at your fingertips and with Microsoft Studios’ catalog, there’s also a level of quality there.
