According to a recent job advertisement at Microsoft, there is a new version of the Xbox slated to be released within the next 18 months.
Part of the job request reads, “Over the next eighteen months, Microsoft will release new versions of all of our most significant products including Windows (Client, Server, Phone and Azure), Office, and Xbox, along with completely new offerings like Microsoft Surface,”
This is contradictory in comparison to the recent statements regarding an apparent mix-up during an interview where Microsoft general manager Brian Hall slipped up in saying “new Xbox”. Microsoft has since shut down the issue stating that all was referring to the Xbox Live update scheduled for this fall.
Even if the supposed slip up was in fact a reference to an online update to current systems, it is entirely possible the company could be testing out new formats on the current system in order to prepare for a successful launch in the next generation.
