SNES games were announced today for the New 3DS and New 3DS XL systems during one of the first big Nintendo Directs of the year. There was much that was talked about during the Direct and we have you covered; for Wii U news click here and for 3DS news click here. One of the biggest surprises that came out of the Direct was the announcement that starting today, Nintendo would be adding SNES titles to the eShop for the New 3DS family of systems.
The first batch of titles that launched today were Super Mario World, F-Zero and Pilotwings, which some of you may recognize as the key titles that launched alongside the Super Nintendo many years ago. On March 24 they will be adding another set of gems, including Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart, and Earthbound. The last batch that they have announced, for April 14, include some very popular SNES titles; The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Metroid, as well as Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Quest. The New 3DS hardware enables something called Perfect Pixel Mode, allowing players to play the games in their original resolution.
Little is known in regards to future releases, but the SNES has a much beloved catalogue of games, and hopefully Nintendo will find some more classics to please gamers. This is a great move by Nintendo, as there has been little reason to pick up a New 3DS outside of wanting to play Xenoblade Chronicles or have the additional analogue nub. This could be reason for many to finally upgrade from their older systems as many regard certain SNES titles as some of the greatest games of all time. There was plenty of great news from the Nintendo Direct, but this one was a stunner and should help Nintendo move some more units, even as they recently cut their sales forecasts as 3DS sales have been falling.
